More About Cheryl
I have dedicated my life to fitness and well being because it is my passion and I believe I was put on the earth to help others lead a more fulfilling life by being fitter and healthier, and to also love the process.
I have also been active, even as a child, playing chase and ‘Bulldog’ out in the street. I was in the school team for practically every team sport, netball, basketball, football, athletics, I even tried to start a girl’s rugby team, to my teacher’s dismay, and ran cross-country for Hampshire.
In my teenage years, my true passion became dance; ballet, tap and modern jazz. I competed in competitions and was driven to explore the freedom of movement from contemporary styles.
As most teenagers experience, the discovery of alcohol and partying started to take over life, replacing all of my exercise.
I noticed that I started to struggle whilst studying BSc(Hons) Psychology at Portsmouth University, energy levels were low and I found it hard to concentrate, not to mention the weight gain from all the drinking and unhealthy student eating. Things needed to change, and quick.
I remember joining my first gym, I was there all the time, playing on all the machines every time I was there, not having a clue what to do really. So, I tried classes, and LOVED them. I tried everything and fell in love with fitness all over again. At the time I couldn’t wait until the next class, it just felt right to feel alive again, active and to be having good, clean fun.
I never expected to make so many new and now close friends just by attending classes. I completely fell in love with exercise, the natural adrenalin rush and just generally feeling amazing. Fitness got me through a hard point in my life, it gave me focus, made me forget things and feel great for that moment in time.
I was inspired to become an instructor myself, so I studied hard alongside working full time in an office. I obtained:
- Level 2 Exercise To Music
- Les Mills Bodybalance.
- Indoor Cycling certification
- Les Mills Bodystep
- Les Mills Bodycombat
- Les Mills GRIT Series (Strength, Plyo & Cardio)
- Les Mills RPM
- Level 2 Gym Instructor
- Level 3 Personal Trainer
- My Kind of Yoga™
Now it wasn’t just about how I felt, and what I got out of it, but what the class participants got out of it, progressions that they made. This was my passion and I finally found my calling in life; to help people get fitter and live the lives that they want. It was hard to juggle, but when you want something badly enough, you will always find a way. I wanted it so bad!!!
I am also fortunate to be a ‘Tribe Coach’ for Les Mills, as I had been awarded as an Elite Advanced Bodybalance instructor, answering questions and helping other instructors be the best that they can be. I have helped new and existing instructors to improve technique, coaching and understanding of the program that they teach, specifically Bodybalance. This is done purely for the love, watching others blossom is all the reward that one needs.
I am also known for loving a good challenge. In my adult life, the highlights have been:
- Winner of the Les Mills GRIT Championship 2014
- Third in Superhuman Events Superhuman Games 2014, female under 35 category
- Personal bests in Sprint, Olympic and Olympic Plus Triathlon distances
- Entered an Iron Man for 2015, eeekkk!!!!!
- Holding a plank for 21:04 minutes.
As for food, well, prior to my fitness and office career, I have been a Head Chef in various restaurants and countries, making me an expert of the culinary delights of British, Austrian and Mexican food, among others. I love to eat and I love to cook. I am experimental with food to find a tasty, easy and nutritiously healthy way to supplement my active lifestyle. Currently studying Nutrition, I have helped many clients to find a way of changing their diet for the better in a way that is sustainable and easy to maintain in a hectic life.
My Yoga Journey
I have tried many different Yoga classes ever since first trying out fitness classes. I really wanted to get into them, as I understood the benefits of flexibility and core strength, however, it was a struggle as I often found them boring and had no idea what they were talking about with all the fancy words. For years I flittered in and out but never really committed to it. It wasn’t until I went to my first Les Mills Bodybalance class that I found something I could stick to. Maybe it was the music, or maybe it was because I understood was I was being told to do, but whatever it was, it helped me to fall in love with yoga.
When I did my Les Mills Bodybalance instructor training I met Ann-See Yeoh, the creator of My Kind of Yoga™. I loved the way she taught, it made so much sense to me and I really connected my mind and body to movement. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work closely with Ann-See as she became my yoga mentor, teaching me about the philosophy and how to develop my own yoga practice to suit my own needs. I started practicing every day, or at least whenever my busy life allowed me to, even if it was just a few minutes each day focusing on my breath and trying to be quiet in my own mind.
I started to notice how not only did my body feel amazing, I reduced my chance of injury by listening to my body when I got little niggles and took actions to change it, and my mind was so much more focused and clearer. Yoga made a definite improvement to my life and provided the perfect balance to all the high intensity and energetic activities that I needed. If I stop doing Yoga my body starts to break, it certainly notices it.
My Kind of Yoga™ is the Yoga that I am passionate about, it is the yoga that is suited to you, it can be whatever you want it to be to get what you want out of it. I am proud to be able to share this with you, and I hope you love it as much as I do.
